Part of the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, Florida Metropolitan statistical area, Cocoa Beach is a city in Brevard County, Florida and was the first non-native settlement in the area, founded by a group of freed slaves following the American Civil War.
In the 1960's, as a result of the U.S. Space program, Cocoa Beach started a major population increase. NASA's John F. Kennedy Space Center is located approximately 15 miles north of town, where guests still enjoy many shows, exhibits, and attractions that give this popular area the name The Space Coast. All of NASA-launched manned spaceflights have departed from either Kennedy Space Center or Cape Canaveral; Project Mercury in 1961 to the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011.
Cocoa Beach has been referred to as the quintessential beach town.
